The Prado at Balboa Park is still the park’s main sit-down restaurant, serving lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday in the House of Hospitality. For a more casual meal, Panama 66 in the San Diego Museum of Art’s sculpture garden and Artifact at the Mingei Museum are the other standouts. Coffee and quick bites come from museum cafés, Daniel’s Coffee in Spanish Village and snack carts along El Prado.

Several names you may remember from older guides have changed. The Dinosaur Cafe and Galileo Cafe live on under new operators, and the Village Grill has been closed since 2017. Details below.

Sit-down restaurants

The Prado at Balboa Park

The Prado fills the courtyard side of the House of Hospitality, steps from the Visitors Center and a short walk from the Old Globe. It’s the park’s one true full-service restaurant, with indoor dining rooms and a terrace overlooking the Casa del Rey Moro Garden. The house sangria on the terrace is its signature.

  • Address: 1549 El Prado, Suite 12, San Diego, CA 92101
  • Hours (posted): Tue–Sat 11:30am–8pm, Sun 11:30am–7:30pm, closed Monday. Call for holiday hours.
  • Phone: 619-557-9441
  • Menu and reservations: pradobalboa.com

The Prado also hosts weddings and private events, so it’s worth booking ahead on weekends. If you’re looking for the old “Prado lounge menu,” check the current menus on its site. It closes by 8pm, so plan on lunch or an early dinner.

Panama 66

Panama 66 runs the outdoor café in the San Diego Museum of Art’s May S. Marcy Sculpture Court, among the bronzes. Older guides call this space the Sculpture Court Café; the Panama 66 team has operated it since 2014. It’s counter service: order at the counter, take a number, find a seat, and food comes to you. It’s known for local craft beer, cocktails and sandwiches in a garden setting.

The Panama 66 site posts weekly hours. Food service generally starts at 11am (10am on weekends), with later evening hours Wednesday through Saturday, and the kitchen opens at 4pm on Wednesdays. A few practical notes:

  • No reservations, and groups larger than 8 are hard to seat.
  • Outside food isn’t allowed in the garden.
  • It closes for private events and weddings on some Saturdays, and for about a month of garden maintenance each year, usually between January and March. Check the closures list before you go.
  • Rain closures are posted on Instagram (@panama66sdma).

Artifact at Mingei

Artifact is the restaurant inside the Mingei International Museum on Plaza de Panama, run by Urban Kitchen Group. It was added to the Michelin Guide California in 2023. The cooking is eclectic and international, with plenty of plant-based options. The official page lists:

  • Lunch: Tue–Sun, 11:30am–2:30pm
  • Bar happy hour: Fri–Sun, 2:30–5pm
  • Dinner: Friday, 5–8pm, with à la carte and prix fixe options, plus occasional themed regional dinners
  • Reservations: through OpenTable via the official page

Tobey’s 19th Hole Cafe

Tobey’s sits at the Balboa Park Golf Course clubhouse, on a mesa looking across the fairways to the downtown skyline. The city granted the Tobey family the original food concession here in 1934, and the family still runs it. Expect a no-frills diner: breakfast and lunch only, with hearty plates such as corned beef hash, chicken-fried steak and club sandwiches, plus beer and brunch cocktails. Because the city ties it to golf course hours, it closes in the late afternoon. San Diego Magazine reviewed it in March 2026 as one of the city’s last truly affordable classic eateries.

Cafés, coffee and quick bites

Craft Café (Mingei)

The casual side of Artifact, open daily 8:30am–5pm. It serves Dark Horse coffee, Paru tea, house-made pastries, salads, toasts and bowls. It’s the best early coffee stop on the Prado.

The Craft Taco (The Nat), formerly the Dinosaur Cafe

The San Diego Natural History Museum’s atrium café was long known as the Dinosaur Cafe. In October 2024 the museum brought in The Craft Taco, a Sorrento Valley taco shop, to run its café. It serves made-to-order tacos on blue corn tortillas, burritos, bowls, coffee drinks, pastries and paletas. It’s just inside The Nat’s north entrance by the big fig tree, open daily 10am–5pm, and Balboa Park’s listing says museum admission isn’t required. The museum also lists The Flying Squirrel Café in the atrium, currently with limited service.

Came for the dinosaurs? The Nat’s fossil halls are the park’s dinosaur destination, and its Tom Deméré Paleontology Center opened in June 2025 with a working fossil-prep lab. See our Balboa Park museums guide for tickets and hours.

Element 8 Cafe (Fleet Science Center), formerly Galileo Cafe

The Fleet Science Center’s café was once Galileo’s Café and later Craveology. When the renovated Fleet reopened in summer 2026, it debuted Element 8 Cafe, open daily 10am–5pm. The menu runs to grab-and-go salads, wraps and bowls, hot paninis and flatbreads, a kids’ menu, and soft-serve with more than a dozen toppings. It’s a good pick with children. The Element 8 page has the full menu.

Tea Pavilion

Next to the Japanese Friendship Garden at 2215 Pan American Way, open daily 10:30am–4pm. It serves imported teas, rice bowls, sandwiches, salads and snacks. It’s a calm spot away from the Prado crowds. The menu is on the Tea Pavilion site.

Daniel’s Coffee

A coffee stand in Spanish Village Art Center (1770 Village Place) with shaded seating nearby. The city’s dining list also mentions a Daniel’s Coffee Court in the House of Hospitality courtyard, across from the Visitors Center. It serves espresso drinks, chai, matcha and baked goods, and it makes an easy pause between the zoo and the Prado. Pair it with our Spanish Village guide.

Lady Carolyn’s Pub (The Old Globe)

If you searched for “the pub next to the Globe Theatre,” this is it. Lady Carolyn’s is the Old Globe’s own pub, with covered seating in the adjacent Stephen and Mary Birch Pavilion. According to the Old Globe dining page, it opens on performance days 90 minutes before showtime (one hour before matinees) and during intermissions. It has a full bar plus soup, sandwiches and snacks. You can pre-order intermission drinks. Food isn’t allowed inside any of the Globe’s theatres.

Inside the zoo and Air & Space

Albert’s Restaurant inside the San Diego Zoo and the Flight Path Grill at the San Diego Air & Space Museum both require that venue’s admission.

Snack carts and ice cream

The city’s Balboa Park dining list notes snack carts along El Prado and near the Spreckels Organ Pavilion selling hot dogs, ice cream, lemonade and soda. For a sit-down ice cream, Element 8’s soft-serve is the best bet, and The Craft Taco’s paletas are a good grab-and-go treat.

What happened to the old favorites

  • The Prado: open. See hours above.
  • Dinosaur Cafe: the name is gone. The Nat’s café is now The Craft Taco (since October 2024).
  • Galileo Cafe: replaced first by Craveology and, since the Fleet’s 2026 reopening, by Element 8 Cafe.
  • Sculpture Court Café: the sculpture garden café has been Panama 66 since 2014.
  • Village Grill: closed since 2017. In May 2025 the city picked Jeff Motch and Clea Hantman (Panama 66, Blind Lady Ale House) to turn the building near Spanish Village into a new restaurant. Reports at the time pointed to a 2026 opening, but the city’s dining page still lists it as closed as of this update.
  • Lady Carolyn’s Pub: still operating at the Old Globe.
  • Thorntree Terrace: no venue by this name appears in current city or park dining listings. Treat it as closed.

Parking for a Balboa Park meal

Balboa Park’s paid parking stays in effect through December 31, 2026, and the city says it ends January 1, 2027. Until then, according to the city’s parking page, enforcement runs daily 8am–6pm. The closest lots to the Prado (Alcazar, Organ Pavilion and others in Level 1) cost nonresidents $16 a day or $10 for four hours. Lots such as Pepper Grove and Upper Inspiration Point are $10 a day for nonresidents and free for verified city residents. Lower Inspiration Point, a longer walk from the Prado, gives nonresidents the first three hours free. Our getting around San Diego guide covers transit options.

Tips

  • Eat early on weekends. Balboa Park is busiest on weekends, and Panama 66 seats first come, first served, so an 11am lunch beats a 1pm one.
  • Check event closures. Panama 66 and The Prado both host weddings and private events.
  • No museum ticket needed for The Craft Taco at The Nat, according to the park’s listing. Ask at the door elsewhere.
  • Pair your meal with the gardens. The Prado terrace overlooks the Casa del Rey Moro Garden, and the Tea Pavilion is beside the Japanese Friendship Garden. See our Balboa Park guide to plan the rest of the day.
