Balboa Park has the biggest cluster of museums in San Diego, most of them lined up along El Prado within a 15-minute walk of each other. The headliners are the San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) for dinosaur fossils, the Museum of Us for human cultures, the Fleet for hands-on science and the San Diego Museum of Art. Smaller gems include the Model Railroad Museum, the WorldBeat Cultural Center and the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater. Adult tickets at the big museums run about $20 to $25. San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat)

Where: 1788 El Prado, at the east end of the Prado near the Bea Evenson Fountain.

The Nat is the park’s dinosaur museum. Its permanent Fossil Mysteries exhibit walks through about 75 million years of Southern California and Baja California history, from dinosaurs to mastodons, using fossils the museum’s paleontologists dug up during local construction projects. Amazement in the Basement puts more of the research collection on display, with a view into the new Paleontology Center.

Other permanent galleries include Coast to Cactus (regional habitats), Expedition Baja, a Living Lab with more than 20 live animals such as scorpions and nocturnal lizards, a wall of about 200 animal skulls, a minerals gallery and The Backyard play space for small children. The Foucault pendulum greets you at the Prado entrance. The temporary show as of November 2026 is Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea, sculptures built from beach trash.

Hours and tickets: Open 10 am to 5 pm daily, closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. All-day tickets are $24.95 for adults and $16.95 for ages 3 to 17; ages 2 and under are free. Nat at Night keeps the museum open until 11 pm on most Fridays through December 18, 2026, with a rooftop bar and half-price entry after 5 pm ($12.50 adults). Check the museum’s visit page for current prices.

Museum of Us (formerly the San Diego Museum of Man)

Where: 1350 El Prado, under the California Tower at the west end of the Prado, just past the Cabrillo Bridge.

If you searched for the “San Diego Museum of Man on El Prado,” this is it. It now operates as the Museum of Us. The building dates to the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, and the casts of Maya stelae in its rotunda have been on view since that fair, except during World War II, when the building served as a hospital. Exhibits focus on human cultures and identity.

Hours and tickets: Open daily 10 am to 5 pm. Per the museum’s ticket page, adults pay $21.95; seniors 62+, military, students, teachers and youth 6 to 17 pay $16.95. A ticket includes a year of free admission. The California Tower tour costs $10 on top of admission and is the best view in the park, so book it early on busy days.

San Diego Model Railroad Museum (the train museum)

Where: Lower level of the Casa de Balboa, 1649 El Prado. Use the public elevator on the west side of the lobby, entered from the Prado.

This is San Diego’s train museum: 27,000 square feet of model railroad layouts tucked beneath El Prado. It’s an easy win for kids and a long, happy browse for train fans.

Hours and tickets: Wednesday to Sunday, 11 am to 4 pm, closed Thanksgiving (November 26, 2026). Admission is $20 for adults 13+, $14 for seniors 65+ and military, $12 for students and $10 for ages 5 to 12. Up to four children 4 and under get in free with each paying adult. San Diego County residents and active military get in free on the second Thursday of each month (except December). Details are on the museum’s hours page.

WorldBeat Cultural Center

Where: 2100 Park Blvd, near the Park Boulevard side of the park, in a former water tower covered in murals.

The WorldBeat Center is a nonprofit founded by Makeda Cheatom in 1993. It moved to its Balboa Park home in 1995 and celebrates African Diaspora and Indigenous cultures. Inside are galleries, small shops and a stage and dance floor under flags from many nations. It hosts concerts, classes such as tai chi and capoeira angola, and community events including a free Kwanzaa celebration. The OneWorldBeat Cafe serves vegan food.

Upcoming in November 2026: Taikopalooza on November 21 (1:30 pm) and the vegan Thanksgiving-week potluck on November 26 (1 pm). Event prices vary. Check worldbeatcenter.org or call (619) 230-1190 before visiting, as the center doesn’t publish fixed gallery hours.

Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater

Where: 2130 Pan American Road, near the Palisades, south of the Plaza de Panama.

This small, low-cost theater, named for puppeteer Marie Hitchcock, is ideal for preschoolers and early grade-schoolers. Most shows run Friday through Sunday at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm. Regular tickets are $7 general and $5 seniors and military; holiday shows are $10 and $7. The Magic of Christmas plays November 27 to 29, 2026. Book through balboaparkpuppets.com or call (619) 544-9203.

  • Watch the closed days. The Model Railroad Museum is closed Monday and Tuesday, SDMA is closed Wednesday and Mingei is closed Monday. Tuesday through Sunday gives the most choice.
  • Park once. Paid parking runs 8 am to 6 pm through December 31, 2026, and ends January 1, 2027. Lower Inspiration Point gives nonresidents three free hours, and the free tram drops you near El Prado. Our Balboa Park guide has the full parking table.
  • Pair two neighbors. The Model Railroad Museum in the Casa de Balboa is a short walk from the Visitors Center in the House of Hospitality. The Nat and the Fleet face each other across the fountain. The Museum of Us sits beside the Old Globe and the Alcazar Garden.
  • Kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at most museums.
