Fleet Science Center San Diego: Tickets, IMAX Dome & Hours

The Fleet Science Center (formally the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center) is Balboa Park’s hands-on science museum, with more than 100 interactive exhibits and the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater, which shows IMAX films. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A standard ticket costs $29.95 for adults and includes one Dome documentary. San Diego residents get in free on the first Tuesday of each month.
What the Fleet Science Center is
The Fleet opened on March 10, 1973, as the Reuben H. Fleet Space Theater and Science Center. Its tilted dome was built to show 70mm IMAX films, and the museum describes the Heikoff Giant Dome as the world’s first IMAX dome theater. The name comes from Reuben H. Fleet, an early military aviator who was the U.S. Air Mail Service’s “Air Mail Pilot #1” and later ran Consolidated Aircraft, the San Diego company that built B-24 Liberators and PBY Catalinas in World War II. (If you searched “Reuben Wheeland,” this is the place you were looking for.)
The building sits at the east end of El Prado next to the Bea Evenson Fountain, at 1875 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101. Call (619) 238-1233.
What’s new after the 2026 renovation
The Fleet finished the second phase of its Science Starts Here capital campaign this year and held a Grand Reopening Weekend on June 27 and 28, 2026. According to the museum’s own summary, the changes include:
- A free entrance gallery. The main entrance has moved back to its original spot outside the Dome, and the new gallery there is free to the public.
- Mindbender Mansion, a puzzle-and-brainteaser exhibit in the former entry rotunda.
- ZWO Astronomy Photographer of the Year, an astrophotography exhibition from Royal Museums Greenwich, in a remodeled basement that had been closed to the public for decades.
- Trolley tubes, a giant pneumatic map modeled on the MTS transit system.
- Element 8 Cafe, a new cafe with local coffee, grain bowls and a dedicated ice cream counter.
- Accessibility upgrades to existing favorites, aimed at young children and visitors with limited mobility.
The Dome itself was modernized earlier and reopened on November 1, 2023.
The exhibit galleries
The core galleries cover a wide range: Digital Me, Mechanics, Alive, Space, Gallery, Studio X and Kid City. Kid City is the toddler and preschool zone, so families with children under five should head there first before it fills up. Studio X is a maker-style space used for group projects. Older kids and adults tend to spend the most time in the mechanics and space areas and the new astrophotography gallery downstairs.
Plan on two to three hours for the galleries plus one Dome film. With a full Dome schedule, you can make a whole day of it.
IMAX and Dome films
The Heikoff Giant Dome Theater shows IMAX documentaries during the day and occasional special engagements in the evening. Here is how it works, per the Fleet’s shows page:
- One documentary is included with a Fleet Experience ticket. More documentaries are $9.95 each, bought at the ticket counter.
- No reservations. Documentaries are first come, first served, and the museum does not sell tickets for individual showtimes. Doors open about 10 minutes before the film, and no one is let in once it starts.
- Showtimes rotate. In November 2026 the lineup includes Deep Sky (James Webb Space Telescope imagery), Sea Otters: A Wild Family Adventure, Wings Over Water, America the Beautiful and We, The Marines, with screenings roughly every hour from 11 a.m. to the late afternoon.
- Special engagements cost extra. Dune: Part Three, filmed for IMAX, is scheduled for evening screenings in late December and early January. Feature films like this are priced separately from the documentaries.
- Accessibility. Free assistive listening headsets and Rear Window captioning devices are available, and some films offer Spanish narration on headsets. Ask at the ticket counter.
School groups often fill the 11 a.m. films Monday through Thursday, so a midday or afternoon show is usually calmer on weekdays.
The Dome also doubles as the Fleet’s planetarium for a monthly live sky show called The Sky Tonight. For dates, tickets and what the show covers, see our San Diego planetarium guide.

Parking and getting there
Driving. The closest lot is the Space Theater lot behind the Fleet, reached from Park Boulevard by turning onto Space Theater Way. Note that some of the Fleet’s own pages still describe parking as free, but that is out of date. Under the city’s Balboa Park parking program, the Space Theater lot is a Level 1 paid lot, enforced daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through December 31, 2026:
- Nonresidents: $10 for up to four hours, $16 for the full day
- Verified city residents: $5 for up to four hours, $8 for the full day (registration required in advance)
- Cheaper alternatives: Level 2 lots such as Bea Evenson are $10 a day for nonresidents, and Lower Inspiration Point (Level 3) gives nonresidents the first three hours free
- Disabled placards and plates park free in all lots
The City Council has approved ending paid parking in Balboa Park on January 1, 2027. Check the city page if you are visiting around the changeover.
Transit. MTS Bus 7 and Rapid 215 stop on Park Boulevard near the Fleet. Rapid 215 also connects to the Santa Fe Depot (Amtrak and COASTER) and the cruise ship terminal. From the west side of the park, take Routes 3 or 120 to Fourth or Fifth Avenue near Laurel Street, then walk east across the Cabrillo Bridge and along El Prado, about 15 minutes.
Insider tips
- Arrive at 10 a.m. on weekends. Kid City and the most popular hands-on stations get crowded by late morning.
- Grab a Dome showtime as soon as you arrive. Because seating is first come, first served, line up 10 to 15 minutes early for the film you want, especially on free Tuesdays.
- Eat on site. With the new Element 8 Cafe in the building, you can break for lunch without losing your place in the day.
- Free Tuesday is busy. If you are a resident with toddlers, a regular weekday morning is usually more relaxed than the first Tuesday.
Who it suits and what to pair it with
The Fleet works best for families with kids from toddler age to about 12, and for anyone who wants a big-screen documentary. Teens and adults who like space will get the most out of the astrophotography gallery and The Sky Tonight.
The Natural History Museum (The Nat) is next door across the plaza, so the two make an easy science-themed day. For a break outdoors, take a short walk to the sunken Zoro Garden or browse our Balboa Park gardens guide for more green space close by.
