Mitsuwa Marketplace (Japanese)
Mitsuwa San Diego is the local branch of the Japanese supermarket chain best known for its Los Angeles-area stores. It is smaller than some of the chain’s bigger locations, but it covers the essentials well: Japanese produce and seafood, rice, sauces, snacks, and ready-to-eat onigiri, sushi and bento.
The store is open 9am to 9pm daily at 4240 Kearny Mesa Rd, near Mercury Street and Armour Street. The phone is (858) 569-6699. Mitsuwa notes that hours can change without notice.
Mitsuwa’s food stalls
Most people come for lunch as much as groceries. The shops and restaurants inside, with their posted hours, are:
- Santouka (Hokkaido ramen): Monday to Saturday 11am to 8pm (last order 7:30pm), Sunday 11am to 7pm. For many people this is the reason to make the drive.
- Musashiya (Japanese dishes): daily 11am to 6:30pm, last order 6pm.
- JCrepes & Cafe: daily 11am to 6:30pm, last order 6pm.
- J.sweets (Japanese confections): daily 10am to 7pm.
- Mitsuwa Nagomi: the in-store sushi and deli counter.
- Niitakaya (Japanese pickles): daily 9am to 8pm.
- Trendy (household goods): daily 11am to 8pm.
- Cool Japan Kyoto (tableware): weekends only, 11am to 8pm.
Weekend lunch is the busiest time. Arriving close to 11am, when most of the food stalls open, gives you the full choice.
Other Japanese markets nearby
Nijiya Market
Nijiya Market is at 3860 Convoy St, #109, in a strip mall in the heart of the Convoy District. It is smaller than Mitsuwa and is known for fresh seafood, sauces and grab-and-go lunch and snack options. It is open 9am to 9pm daily, with shorter hours on some holidays (for example, 9am to 8pm on Thanksgiving Day).
Tokyo Central (formerly Marukai)
The two buildings on Balboa Avenue that many San Diegans still call Marukai now operate as Tokyo Central. The grocery store at 8151 Balboa Ave is open 8am to 9pm daily. Next door, Tokyo Central & Main at 8111 Balboa Ave is open 10am to 8pm and focuses on non-food items such as home goods and gifts. If you remember a separate dollar-style store and furniture shop at the old Marukai site, expect a different layout today.
For Japanese housewares on a budget, there is also a Daiso at 8199 Clairemont Mesa Blvd in the same part of Kearny Mesa.
99 Ranch Market (Chinese and pan-Asian)
99 Ranch Market is a Taiwanese-American chain founded in 1984 in Westminster, California. It stocks Chinese, Taiwanese and wider pan-Asian groceries, and the San Diego stores have seafood departments, hot food and bakeries.
San Diego County has three stores:
- Balboa Avenue (Genesee Plaza), 5950 Balboa Ave. Opened in October 2016 as the chain’s second San Diego store. It is the roomier of the two Kearny Mesa locations, with wider aisles, a bakery in the center of the store, a bulk foods section and a small food court with several independent vendors.
- Clairemont Mesa, 7330 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. The original San Diego 99 Ranch, about 2 miles away. It is older and tighter, but convenient if you are also stopping at Zion or Daiso. People searching “99 Ranch Clairemont” may mean either store, since both sit on the Clairemont/Kearny Mesa border.
- Chula Vista, 505 Telegraph Canyon Rd (Canyon Plaza). The South Bay option, handy if you are staying near the border or in Chula Vista.
Ranch 99 or 99 Ranch?
Both refer to the same chain. The official name is 99 Ranch Market, but some store signs put the “99” between “Ranch” and “Market,” so many shoppers say Ranch 99.
99 Ranch cakes
The in-store bakeries sell Asian-style cakes along with buns and pastries, and “99 Ranch cakes” is a common search for birthday shoppers. Selection, sizes and ordering rules vary by store, so ask at the bakery counter of your location, ideally a day or two before a weekend celebration.
Korean markets
Zion Market
Zion Market moved to a new, larger building at 8330 Clairemont Mesa Blvd in Kearny Mesa, and the new store opened in January 2025. It covers about 50,000 square feet, with a full Korean grocery, produce, a liquor department and outdoor seating. The development was also planned to include a 25,000-square-foot rooftop food hall with restaurants and a cocktail bar. Check what is open on the day you visit.
H Mart
San Diego’s H Mart is at 9440 Mira Mesa Blvd in Mira Mesa, north of the Convoy cluster. It is a full Korean-American supermarket with a bakery, a food court and a large seafood section. Check H Mart’s store page for current hours.
Getting there and parking
The Kearny Mesa markets are reached most easily by car, and they sit in shopping centers with on-site parking. Convoy Street itself is a busy commercial strip, and popular plazas get crowded at weekend lunchtime, so a weekday morning is the easiest time to shop.
Visitors without a car can use rideshare from downtown or the beach neighborhoods. Combine several stores in one trip: Mitsuwa, Tokyo Central and the Balboa Avenue 99 Ranch are all close to Balboa Avenue, and Nijiya and Zion are a few minutes away on Convoy and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.
Insider tips
- Bring a cooler bag. If you are buying sashimi, frozen dumplings or mochi ice cream to take back to a hotel, an insulated bag helps in warm weather.
- Eat first, then shop. Grab a bowl at Santouka or a crepe, then shop on a full stomach. It saves money on snacks.
- Check holiday hours. Nijiya and other stores publish special Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s hours, and the Japanese markets get busy before New Year’s.
- Packing snacks for the flight home. Japanese candy, rice crackers and tea from Mitsuwa or Tokyo Central make easy souvenirs that survive a suitcase.
Who it suits
The Kearny Mesa markets are worth a dedicated trip if you cook Asian food at home, are staying somewhere with a kitchen, or simply want an inexpensive, high-quality lunch away from the tourist zones. Mitsuwa is the best single stop for first-time visitors, 99 Ranch for the widest pan-Asian range, and Zion or H Mart for Korean ingredients and banchan.
