San Diego’s main Cinco de Mayo celebration is the free Fiesta Cinco de Mayo in Old Town, held on the weekend nearest May 5 at Fiesta de Reyes inside Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. In 2026 it ran Saturday and Sunday, May 2–3, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Gaslamp Quarter, Seaport Village and SeaWorld also hold their own events, and the holiday itself marks Mexico’s 1862 victory at the Battle of Puebla, not Mexican Independence Day.

Fiesta Cinco de Mayo in Old Town

Old Town is where San Diego’s Cinco de Mayo tradition started. Diane Powers founded the celebration more than 40 years ago, and the local chamber now runs it. Over the decades it grew from a local celebration into a San Diego tradition. Today’s version is billed as a free block party, centered on the state park rather than spread across the neighborhood. Expect live traditional music, folklórico dance, food and art, mostly in and around Fiesta de Reyes.

2026 details (from the official event site and KPBS’s listing):

  • Dates: Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3, 2026
  • Hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days
  • Cost: Free, including entry to the state park
  • Main venue: Fiesta de Reyes, a courtyard with about ten shops and two restaurants inside Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, 4002 Wallace St.
  • Also in the park: the historic Cosmopolitan Hotel, which the organizers list as host of a separate art and food festival

The 2027 dates had not been posted as of November 2026. Because May 5, 2027 falls on a Wednesday, the fiesta will most likely move to the weekend before or after, so watch the official site in the spring.

What to expect

The fiesta feels like Old Town on a busy weekend, with more music and dancing. Folklórico groups perform in bright ruffled skirts, traditional bands play, and the restaurants around Fiesta de Reyes fill up with families. Between sets you can walk the rest of the state park, which has a working blacksmith shop, historic adobe buildings and small museums with free admission (listed as 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily). Our Old Town guide covers the park’s buildings, shops and restaurants in more detail.

It suits families, first-time visitors and anyone who wants a daytime, family-oriented celebration. If you want a party scene, head downtown in the evening instead.

Getting there

Old Town Transit Center is right beside the park and is served by the UC San Diego Blue Line and Green Line trolleys, the Coaster commuter train and MTS buses. The organizers recommend the trolley to avoid traffic, and parking near Old Town fills quickly on busy weekends. See our getting around San Diego guide for fares and the PRONTO app.

Chula Vista and South Bay

Chula Vista has held Cinco de Mayo festivals in the past, including a free Cinco de Mayo Fest at Bayside Park in 2019. No large Chula Vista Cinco de Mayo festival appeared in 2026 event listings. That year the Chula Vista Bayfront at 980 Marina Way hosted the “5inco de Miles” run. For South Bay plans, check the City of Chula Vista’s events calendar in April.

Chicano Park

Chicano Park in Barrio Logan is not a Cinco de Mayo venue. Its big annual celebration is Chicano Park Day in April (the 56th was held April 25, 2026). Still, the park’s murals under the Coronado Bridge are among the most important Mexican-American landmarks in the city and worth a visit around the holiday.

What Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates

Cinco de Mayo marks the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. France’s Emperor Napoleon III had sent troops to Mexico to set up a government friendly to France, against the wishes of President Benito Juárez. At Puebla, Mexican forces under General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated a French army of roughly 6,000 troops; estimates of the Mexican force range from 2,000 to 5,000, according to History.com. According to Britannica, the French lost about 1,000 men and fell back to the coast. They later returned with reinforcements and took Puebla after a long siege, and Mexico retook the city in 1867. The win at Puebla became a lasting symbol of resistance to foreign invasion, and Juárez declared May 5 a national holiday days after the battle.

It is not Mexican Independence Day

This is the most common mix-up. Mexican Independence Day is September 16, marking Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla’s 1810 Grito de Dolores, the call to revolt against Spanish rule. Within Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is mainly observed in the state of Puebla, with military parades and battle reenactments. It is not a federal holiday there, so banks and offices generally stay open, while September 16 is the big national celebration.

How it became a U.S. holiday

According to USC Dornsife, Mexican communities in California reportedly celebrated the Puebla victory during the Civil War, when many saw it as a blow to a European power that might have aided the Confederacy. The holiday then faded in the U.S. for almost a century. It returned in California in the mid-20th century with the Chicano movement, which saw its underdog story as a reflection of the civil rights struggle. Beer companies’ marketing in the 1980s and 1990s then made it the commercial, nationwide holiday it is today.

In San Diego, a border city with deep Mexican roots, the day is mostly a celebration of Mexican-American culture, music and food rather than a commemoration of the battle.

Tips for Cinco de Mayo in San Diego

  • Go early for Old Town. Arrive near the 11 a.m. opening for easier parking or a less crowded trolley.
  • Pick daytime or nighttime. Old Town and Seaport Village are relaxed daytime events; the Gaslamp and Pacific Beach events are 21+ nightlife.
  • Look for weekend dates. When May 5 falls midweek, most events, including Old Town’s, move to the nearest weekend.
  • Eat beyond the festival. Old Town’s restaurants get very busy that weekend, so book ahead if you want a sit-down Mexican meal.
  • Check official pages each April. Dates, times and formats change from year to year.
