Big Bay Balloon Parade 2026: Holiday Bowl Parade Guide

Updated November 3, 2026 · 6 min read

The Big Bay Balloon Parade hasn’t disappeared. It now goes by the Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade, and the 2026 edition is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Monday, December 28, 2026, along downtown San Diego’s bayfront, on the same day as the Holiday Bowl game. Watching from the curb is free.

If you’re looking for a holiday parade earlier in December, the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights sails on December 13 and 20, 2026. Both are covered below.

Big Bay Balloon Parade: what it’s called now

In the early 2010s the Port of San Diego’s waterfront balloon parade was billed as the Big Bay Balloon Parade, held a few days after Christmas around Holiday Bowl week (KPBS covered the 2013 edition). The event has since settled on the Holiday Bowl branding. Same idea: giant inflatable balloons, marching bands from the competing schools, floats and drill teams along Harbor Drive. Organizers call it “America’s Largest Balloon Parade.”

A quick recent history, so you know it’s still going:

  • 2020: The game and parade both sat out the season.
  • 2021: The parade marched on Harbor Drive even though the game itself was canceled.
  • 2022: A docked cruise ship pushed the route off the water’s edge; it started south of the convention center and finished at Pacific Highway and G Street, per NBC San Diego.
  • 2024: Friday, December 27, 10 a.m., on North Harbor Drive.
  • 2025 season: The game moved to January for the first time, and the parade followed on the morning of Friday, January 2, 2026 (KPBS).
  • 2026: Back in December, on Monday the 28th.

The parade route

The 2026 route map wasn’t out at the time of writing. The organizers describe it only as the “scenic, bayside streets of downtown San Diego.”

For reference, the Port of San Diego’s 2024 listing put the start on North Harbor Drive between Grape Street and West Ash Street, with the parade marching south along the waterfront and ending at Ruocco Park (585 Harbor Lane) near Seaport Village. NBC San Diego described that route as about a mile long. MTS has described the corridor as North Harbor Drive between the County Administration Building and Seaport Village. Expect something similar in 2026 unless a cruise ship or construction forces a change, as in 2022.

Where to watch

  • Near the start (Grape to Ash Street). In 2024 the paid grandstands sat here, on the water side of Harbor Drive, and curbside space nearby fills first.
  • Along the Embarcadero by the Maritime Museum. The historic ships make the best backdrop for photos of the balloons.
  • Near the finish at Ruocco Park and Seaport Village. Usually easier to find space, with coffee and restrooms close by.

Grandstand seats: In 2024 these were $30 each through Eventbrite, near 1400 N. Harbor Drive, with accessible seating and no ticket needed for children under 3. For 2026 the Holiday Bowl says grandstand tickets will go on sale once details are announced. If you have small kids or anyone who can’t stand for an hour, a grandstand seat is worth it.

Pairing the parade with the rest of your day

The parade ends near Seaport Village, so breakfast or coffee along the Embarcadero is easy once the last float passes. From there it’s a short walk to the Maritime Museum’s ships, or a ferry ride across to Coronado. If you’re staying through the afternoon for the game, leave plenty of time to get from downtown to Snapdragon Stadium in Mission Valley; the Green Line trolley serves the stadium, and MTS posts game-day service details.

Getting there: trolley beats parking

Harbor Drive and nearby streets close for the parade, and downtown lots fill quickly on a big event morning. The trolley is the easy option. MTS’s parade page has recommended:

  • Green Line: Seaport Village, Santa Fe Depot or County Center/Little Italy
  • Blue Line: County Center/Little Italy or Santa Fe Depot
  • Orange Line: Courthouse

MTS also points out free parking at lots along the trolley lines, so you can park at an outlying station and ride in. Pay with a PRONTO card or the PRONTO app and tap before you board.

Tips for parade morning

  • Arrive 45 minutes early. With an 8 a.m. start, that means being curbside by about 7:15.
  • Bring layers. Bayfront mornings in late December are cool and can be damp until the sun clears the fog.
  • Expect changes on windy days. Giant balloons depend on calm conditions; in 2021 the parade went ahead with about 10 balloons missing (Times of San Diego).
  • Make a day of it. The Holiday Bowl 5K Run/Walk along the harbor opens the festivities, and the game kicks off at 2 p.m. at Snapdragon Stadium if you have tickets.

San Diego Bay Parade of Lights: the other big holiday parade

If your trip is earlier in December, the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is the one to see. About 80 boats decorated with lights parade across the bay, and it’s free to watch from shore.

  • 2026 dates: Sundays, December 13 and December 20
  • Start: 5:30 p.m.
  • Theme: “Liberty Lights the Bay – Cheers to 250 Years”
  • Route: From the south end of Shelter Island, across the America’s Cup Harbor entrance to Harbor Island, past the Star of India and the Maritime Museum, along the Embarcadero, past Seaport Village and Marina Park to the pier at Barrio Logan (Cesar Chavez) Park, then across the bay to the Coronado Ferry Landing.
  • Timing: It takes about an hour for the parade to pass any one point.

Best spots and parking for the Parade of Lights

The organizers’ announcer areas are at the Maritime Museum on the Embarcadero and Coronado Ferry Landing, where you hear the story of each boat as it passes. Less crowded spots include the north and south ends of the Embarcadero, the Coronado bayfront path, the park behind Seaport Village and the pier at Cesar Chavez Park.

Parking at Shelter Island is free, and Harbor Island is free but limited. Downtown has paid lots near Broadway and Harbor Drive and at Seaport Village, plus metered spaces along Harbor Drive. The organizers suggest taking the trolley to Santa Fe Depot (Blue or Green Line) or Courthouse (Orange Line).

More San Diego holiday events

  • December Nights in Balboa Park, December 4–5, 2026, is the city’s big free holiday festival. Walk in over the Cabrillo Bridge for the classic view.
  • Coastal Christmas at the Del Mar Fairgrounds is a walk-through light trail with Santa photos and skating from December 11, 2026. See our Del Mar holiday lights guide.

Who the balloon parade suits

The Holiday Bowl Parade is ideal for families with kids, marching band fans and anyone in town between Christmas and New Year’s who wants a free morning outing. Fans of the teams playing get a bonus, since their school bands march. If you’re only in San Diego in mid-December, the Parade of Lights gives you the same waterfront setting after dark.
