San Diego Dog Parks & Dog Beaches: Off-Leash Guide 2026
San Diego’s best off-leash spots are Ocean Beach Dog Beach (open 24 hours), Fiesta Island in Mission Bay, Coronado Dog Beach and, outside summer, Del Mar’s North Beach. If you want grass instead of sand, Balboa Park has three leash-free areas, and the city runs about 20 more off-leash parks, many of them fenced, with separate pens for small dogs.
The one rule that catches visitors out: dogs are banned from most San Diego city beaches, the parks next to them and the beachfront sidewalks from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., leashed or not. So the dog beaches below are the places to go.
The dog beaches, compared
| Spot | Where | Off-leash when | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean Beach Dog Beach | Foot of Voltaire St., Ocean Beach | 24 hours | Surf-loving dogs, busy social scene |
| Fiesta Island | Mission Bay Park | Daily, early morning to 10 p.m. | Calm bay water, long walks, ball chasing |
| Coronado Dog Beach | 200 Ocean Blvd., Coronado | On the dog beach only | Wide, flat sand, a quieter outing |
| Del Mar North Beach | 29th St. to the Solana Beach line | Dawn to 8 a.m. in summer; all day off-season | North County trips, fall and winter |
Ocean Beach Dog Beach
This is the one most locals mean when they say “dog beach.” It sits at the north end of Ocean Beach where the San Diego River meets the ocean, at the foot of Voltaire Street. The City of San Diego’s leash-free list shows it open 24 hours, with full beach and ocean access. Dogs have to be legally licensed, and owners must pick up after them.
Expect a crowd on weekend mornings and around sunset, and lots of dogs meeting at full speed. Arrive early if you want parking close to the sand. Rinse your dog off before getting back in the car. Sand and salt water travel well.
Pair it with a leashed stroll through the OB neighborhood (remember the daytime ban on beachfront sidewalks) or a short drive down to Dusty Rhodes Park on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, a one-acre off-leash area open dawn to dusk.
Fiesta Island
Fiesta Island, in the middle of Mission Bay, is mostly leash-optional, including its shoreline and interior. It’s ringed by a road and a 5.2-mile path, and the bay water is flat, which suits older dogs, puppies and anyone with a ball launcher. The city voted it the best dog park in a USA Today reader poll, and locals use it heavily.
Hours: the city’s beach and bay dog rules give 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, while the leash-free list says 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Plan for daylight and you won’t run into either limit. Two fenced least tern nesting sites are off-limits all year, and two buffer zones close from April 15 to September 15. The Youth Aquatic Center area is also closed to dogs. Bring water and shade. There’s very little of either on the island.
Elsewhere in Mission Bay Park, dogs are banned from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from April through October and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from roughly November through March. Outside those hours they must be leashed.
Coronado Dog Beach
The City of Coronado runs its dog beach at 200 Ocean Boulevard at the north end of Coronado’s main beach. Dogs may be off-leash on the dog beach itself but must be leashed everywhere before it, including the walk from your car. Most people park on nearby streets, so read the posted signs.
The sand here is wide and flat and the waves are usually gentle. If you’re searching for a “Coronado dog park,” note that Coronado Cays Park (99 Grand Caribe Isle) has a designated off-leash dog run. Tidelands Park and Bay View Park are leash-only.
Del Mar North Beach (Dog Beach)
Del Mar’s rules change with the season, and this is where people get ticketed. According to the City of Del Mar dog beach regulations:
- North Beach (29th Street to the Solana Beach border): From June 16 through Labor Day, dogs may be off-leash from dawn to 8 a.m. and must be leashed the rest of the day. From the day after Labor Day to June 15, off-leash dogs are allowed.
- Main Beach (Powerhouse Park to 29th Street): No dogs in peak season. Off-season, leashed dogs are allowed, and off-leash dogs are allowed between 25th and 29th streets from dawn to 8 a.m.
- South Beach: Leashed dogs only, all year.
In early November you’re in the off-season, so North Beach is one of the best wide-open runs in the county. It sits at the north end of town by the San Dieguito River mouth. Check posted parking signs, since rules near the beach change by block.
Balboa Park’s three dog parks
Searches for “Balboa Park dog park” usually mean one of these. Balboa Park’s own guide lists all three.
Nate’s Point
Nate’s Point is the easiest for visitors. It’s on the south side of the Cabrillo Bridge, off Balboa Drive at El Prado, so you can walk your dog there and then into the museum district on a leash. It’s about 2.3 acres, fully fenced, open 24 hours, and has a drinking fountain and picnic tables. It has been a dog park since 1996.
Morley Field
Morley Field’s off-leash area is northwest of the tennis courts, near Alabama Street and Morley Field Drive. It’s open 24 hours, parking is free, and it backs onto the Florida Canyon trails if you want a longer leashed hike afterward. It’s an open field rather than a fenced pen, so it’s best for dogs with good recall.
Grape Street Dog Park
Grape Street, at Grape and 28th streets in South Park, is the biggest at five acres of grass and eucalyptus, with two dog fountains and a restroom for people. Off-leash hours are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Outside those hours, dogs need a leash, and the city has enforced this. It’s a good choice if your dog likes a lot of room and other dogs.
Combine a Balboa Park dog visit with a leashed loop through the park’s outdoor gardens. Dogs aren’t allowed inside the museums.
Fenced neighborhood dog parks by area
Most people traveling with a small or nervous dog prefer a fenced park with separate pens. These are on the City of San Diego leash-free list unless noted.
- Pacific Beach: Capehart Park, Felspar St. and Soledad Mountain Rd., is open 24 hours and has separate small- and large-dog pens, water and parking.
- University City: Doyle Community Park, 8175 Regents Rd., has two fenced turf areas and is open 24 hours (not lit). Nobel Park, 8820 Judicial Dr., has separate large- and small-dog sections and is open dawn to dusk.
- Normal Heights: Ward Canyon Neighborhood Park, 3905 Adams Ave., has separate fenced pens and is open dawn to dusk.
- Kearny Mesa: Kearny Mesa Community Park, 3170 Armstrong St., is a lit one-acre area open 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Daytime parking is tight because of Mesa College.
- Allied Gardens: A fenced area behind the pool at 6707 Glenroy St., open dawn to dusk.
- Carmel Valley / Del Mar Heights: Torrey Highlands Park, on Lansdale Dr. off Del Mar Heights Rd., has a one-acre turf and mulch area open dawn to dusk. If you searched “Dirty Dogs Torrey Hills,” that’s a pet grooming business on Carmel Mountain Road, not a public park. Torrey Highlands is the nearby off-leash option.
- Rancho Peñasquitos and Rancho Bernardo: Both have dawn-to-dusk off-leash areas. The Peñasquitos one has two fenced, double-gated turf areas.
Dog parks in nearby cities
- Poway: The Poway Dog Park, 13094 Civic Center Dr., in the southwest corner of Poway Community Park, is open daily from sunrise to 10 p.m. It covers 1.75 acres split into three fenced areas, each with water and benches. Pens can be reserved, and reservations take priority.
- Chula Vista: Neighborhood options include Montevalle Park (840 Duncan Ranch Rd.), with a separate small-dog area, and Mount San Miguel Park (2335 Paseo Veracruz), with separate large and small areas. Check the City of Chula Vista parks page for current hours before you go.
- La Mesa: The off-leash area most people mean is Canine Corners at Harry Griffen Park. Confirm hours with the City of La Mesa.
- Oceanside: Oceanside closed its only off-leash site in 2018. A new facility at Ron Ortega Park is still in design, with no opening date announced. For now, drive south to Del Mar North Beach or inland to a fenced city park.
Rules and tips that matter
- Licensing and cleanup. The city’s exceptions for Dog Beach and Fiesta Island apply to legally licensed dogs. Every leash-free area requires you to pick up after your dog, and you enter at your own risk.
- Leash everywhere else. In city parks, dogs must be leashed outside the posted leash-free zones. On city beaches, the 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ban applies even with a leash.
- Check water quality. After rain, river-mouth beaches like Ocean Beach and Del Mar often get advisories. Check sdbeachinfo.com before letting your dog swim.
- Heat and paws. Fiesta Island and the beach parking lots get hot on sunny afternoons. Mornings are better for dogs.
- Service animals are exempt from the beach and bay restrictions.
