Color Me Mine San Diego & Paint-Your-Own Pottery Studios

You can still paint your own pottery in San Diego, but the name many people search for, Color Me Mine, is no longer the easy answer. The Rancho Bernardo Color Me Mine is listed as closed, and the busiest studios now are The Hot Spot (Liberty Station and 4S Ranch) and The Hangout Pottery Lounge on El Cajon Boulevard. Expect to pay roughly $30 to $36 per project at The Hot Spot, with no studio fee, and to wait days to weeks for kiln-fired pieces.
What happened to Color Me Mine in San Diego
For years, San Diego’s Color Me Mine was the studio at 10550 Craftsman Way in Rancho Bernardo/4S Ranch. Yelp now lists that location as closed, and in November 2026 we could not find a current San Diego County studio on the chain’s website or in local listings. A Carlsbad Color Me Mine also once operated at Westfield Plaza Camino Real (it opened in 2006), but we could not confirm a current listing for it either.
If you find a Color Me Mine address for San Diego on a map app, call before you go. The good news is that the paint-your-own format is alive and well here under other names, and in one case just down the same street.
Searching for Color Me Mine Long Beach? That studio is in Los Angeles County, not San Diego. Visit Long Beach lists it at 5225 2nd Street.
How paint-your-own pottery pricing works
Studios use one of two pricing models, and it is worth knowing which one you are walking into:
- Piece price plus studio fee. This is the classic Color Me Mine model. You pay for the bisque (unglazed) piece and a per-painter studio fee that covers paints, glazes, brushes and firing. Franchise owners set their own prices. A 2026 Seattle’s Child review of one Color Me Mine studio reported a $10 studio fee and pieces from $12, with most between $20 and $40. Those are not San Diego prices, but they show how the bill adds up for a family of four.
- Piece price only. The Hot Spot and The Hangout Pottery Lounge both advertise no studio fee. You pay for what you paint, and supplies and firing are included.
Small items such as tiles, ornaments and tiny figurines are the cheapest choice for young kids who lose interest after 30 minutes. Mugs, plates and large platters cost more and take longer to paint well.

The Hot Spot (Liberty Station)
The Liberty Station studio is at 2770 Historic Decatur Road, Barracks 14, in the Liberty Station shopping, dining and arts district. Hours are 11am to 8pm Sunday through Thursday and 10am to 8pm Friday and Saturday. Besides pottery, the studio offers canvas painting, candle making, mosaics, fairy and gnome gardens and slime. Those non-pottery projects usually go home the same day, which makes this the best pick for visitors who are flying out soon. Most visits take one to two hours, and the studio glazes and fires pottery for you, usually within a few days.
Liberty Station has plenty of lunch options nearby, so it is easy to turn a painting session into a half-day outing.
The Hot Spot (4S Ranch)
The 4S Ranch studio is at 4S Commons Town Center, 10445 Craftsman Way #132, on the same street as the former Color Me Mine address. It is open 11am to 7pm and closed Tuesdays. Pricing and party options match Liberty Station: no studio fee, an average project of $30 to $36 including everything, walk-ins welcome, and reservations recommended for groups of six or more.
Coming soon: Chula Vista and La Jolla
The Hot Spot lists two more San Diego County studios that were not open yet in November 2026:
- Chula Vista, 2015 Birch Road, Suite 219, with an opening date still marked “TBD.”
- La Jolla / UTC area, 4100 Governor Drive, listed as opening in January 2027.
Check their pages before you go, since opening dates for new studios often slip.
The Hangout Pottery Lounge
The Hangout Pottery Lounge at 6435 El Cajon Blvd is the pick for adults and for families who want to take their time. There is no studio fee, no firing fee and no time limit, so you can spend an entire afternoon on one platter. It is closed Monday and Tuesday, open noon to 7pm Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday (last seating 6pm), and noon to 10pm Friday and Saturday (last seating 9pm). The later weekend hours make it one of the few options for an evening date or friends’ night.
Walk-ins are welcome for one to four painters, but the studio can be fully booked, so check its calendar first. Glazed pieces take about 10 to 20 days to be ready. For a same-day souvenir, ask for the acrylic option, which is decorative only and not food safe. Parking is on nearby side streets such as Art Street and Seminole Drive.
Cool Creations Pottery & Art Studio (Pacific Beach)
Cool Creations at 1753-A Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach is a small drop-in studio for all ages that also hosts theme nights and workshops. Its website lists limited afternoon hours, but parts of the site appear several years old, so call (858) 273-2837 to confirm hours before you go. It is an easy add-on to a day at Pacific Beach, especially if the marine layer never burns off.
The Krafty Caterer (mobile)
If you would rather bring the studio to a party, The Krafty Caterer is a Poway-based mobile service that covers the greater San Diego area. It sells to-go kits at $25 plus the cost of the ceramic items (free pickup in Poway or $15 delivery) and quotes kids’ birthday parties, adult painting nights and corporate events individually.
Kids’ birthday parties
Pottery parties are popular for ages 4 to 12 because every child goes home with something, even if it arrives a week later.
- The Hot Spot offers a Kids’ Party Package that includes two custom art projects per child, singing and a celebration for the birthday child, a dedicated party host, and cleanup. Prices and open slots are on each studio’s online booking page.
- The Hangout Pottery Lounge rents “The Backyard” room, which seats about 24 kids or 18 adults, by the hour with a two-hour minimum. Private buyouts of the full studio fit up to 54 guests.
- Weekend party slots go first. Book at least a few weeks ahead for a Saturday.
Tips for a better session
- Let kids choose small. A tile or small animal figure is done in 30 minutes. A dinner plate can take an adult two hours.
- Ask about coats. Glazes often look different wet than they do after firing, so ask staff how many coats each color needs.
- Sketch first. Many studios provide sketch markers or pencils that burn off in the kiln, so outline your design before you paint.
- Visitors, plan the pickup. Pottery is never ready the same day. If you will not be in town for pickup, ask about shipping before you paint, or choose a same-day project such as a candle or canvas.
- Dress for mess. Wear clothes you do not mind getting paint on.
Who it suits
Pottery painting works best as a rainy-day, hot-day or low-energy afternoon for families with kids from about 4 and up, as well as for friend groups and couples looking for something calmer than a bar. If your kids want a bigger, all-morning indoor art experience instead, The New Children’s Museum downtown builds whole art studios into its play floors.
