Strawberry Picking in San Diego: Carlsbad Fields & U-Pick Farms
The easiest strawberry picking near San Diego is at Carlsbad Strawberry Company on Cannon Road, which opens its u-pick field from spring into early summer. For a quieter, inland option, Kenny’s Strawberry Farm near Fallbrook runs reservation-based u-pick from about February or March. If you are reading this in fall or early winter, the big fields are closed for the season, and the next real picking window starts in spring 2027.

Carlsbad Strawberry Company
This is the farm most people mean when they search “Carlsbad strawberry fields.” It sits at 1050 Cannon Rd, Carlsbad, CA 92008, close to The Flower Fields, so the two pair easily on a spring morning. The farm’s official site describes the u-pick season as spring through early summer and recommends arriving early.
Hours and prices
During the 2026 season the field was open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last tickets sold at 4:30 p.m., according to a Secret San Diego report from the 2026 opening. Children 3 and under were free with a paying adult.
The farm does not post a current bucket price on its homepage, and the numbers floating around online come from 2022 or earlier, so don’t rely on them. Call 760-603-9608 or check the site in spring for the 2027 price before you go. Pre-picked baskets are also sold at the stand if you only want berries and not the experience.
Field rules worth knowing before you arrive
The farm’s posted u-pick rules are strict, and staff do enforce them:
- Pay before you pick.
- No pets in the field.
- No outside bags or containers, and no purses, backpacks or baby bags. Leave them in the car.
- Don’t step on plants or jump across rows.
- Don’t overfill the bucket or pick long stems.
Wear closed shoes you don’t mind getting dusty, and bring sun protection. Coastal mornings can be cool and gray, but the field has no shade once the sun breaks through.
What the farm does the rest of the year
In fall the same land becomes a pumpkin patch with a corn maze, tractor rides and photo spots, plus a haunted corn maze around Halloween. That is fun in its own right, but it is not berry picking. If you search “Carlsbad strawberry farm” in October or November and see the farm is open, expect pumpkins, not strawberries.
Kenny’s Strawberry Farm, Fallbrook
Kenny’s Strawberry Farm is at 953 Rainbow Valley Blvd, Fallbrook, CA 92028, in the Rainbow area near the Riverside County line. The farm says its harvest runs from late December to July, with u-pick opening sometime in February or March.
Kenny’s has required online reservations for u-pick in recent seasons, and its days are more limited than Carlsbad’s, so don’t just show up. As of November 2026 the farm’s hours page says the u-pick is closed for the season and will reopen in spring 2027. Watch that page in late winter for the opening date and booking link. The farm’s phone is 951-212-5805.
Kenny’s suits families coming from Temecula or inland North County, and it is usually calmer than Carlsbad on a spring weekend.
Mellano Farm Stand, Oceanside
The Mellano family runs a farm stand at 5750 N. River Road, Oceanside, with a spring “Berries & Blooms” season that combines u-pick strawberries and lavender on weekdays with festival-style weekends (music, vendors, kids’ activities). In 2026 that season ran March 28 to May 10, per Kids Guide Magazine’s event listing. Expect similar timing in 2027, but confirm dates and ticketing on the farm’s own channels first.
Julian Farm and Orchard: the fall and backcountry option
If you want to pick fruit in San Diego County outside spring, head to Julian Farm and Orchard in Wynola, about 3 miles from downtown Julian and roughly an hour from the city. In fall 2026 it is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., through November 15. Strawberries and raspberries are listed as “may be available,” and the latest update describes a light crop. Apple picking is sold out for 2026 (2027 reservations are open), and u-cut pumpkins were still available.
Admission and activity armbands are booked online, while u-pick produce is paid for on-site based on what is ready that day. High winds have closed the farm on short notice this season, so check its updates before making the drive. Combine it with a stop at Lake Cuyamaca for a full backcountry day.
When to go for the best berries
- Early in the season (roughly March to May) usually means the fullest rows and the best fruit. Strawberry plants fade as the weather warms, so June and July picking can be sparse.
- Weekday mornings are the calmest time at Carlsbad. Spring weekends draw the biggest crowds.
- After rain the rows can be muddy. The Carlsbad u-pick can also close for an afternoon without notice, typically when it has been picked over, so call if you are driving a long way.
Getting there and parking
All of these farms are realistically a driving trip. Carlsbad Strawberry Company is on Cannon Road in coastal North County, the closest of the group to the city and the easiest to combine with the beach. Kenny’s sits well inland in the Rainbow Valley near the Riverside County line, and Julian is a winding mountain drive into the backcountry, so allow extra time for both.
On busy spring weekends at Carlsbad, arriving close to opening is the simplest way to avoid crowds at the stand and in the rows.
Tips for a smooth picking trip
- Pick only fully red berries. Strawberries don’t ripen further once picked. Look for red all the way to the stem cap.
- Twist, don’t pull. Hold the stem just above the berry and twist so you don’t uproot the plant.
- Keep the bucket shaded and get berries into a cooler soon after picking. They bruise and soften fast in a warm car.
- Eat them within a couple of days, and wash them only just before eating.
- Plan for small kids. Rows are close together and low to the ground, which is great for toddlers but tiring for adults. Bring water and hats.
Who it suits and what to pair it with
Strawberry picking is a short activity, usually an hour or less in the field, so plan it as part of a bigger day. In Carlsbad, combine it with The Flower Fields in spring and an afternoon at the coast; our San Diego beach guide covers flags and beach rules before you head to the sand. Families with older kids heading north can also add the paragliders at Torrey Pines on the drive back; see our San Diego paragliding guide.
If your trip falls between August and February, skip the strawberry plan and look at Julian for fall fruit and pumpkins instead, then come back to the coastal fields in spring.
