Indoor Rock Climbing in San Diego
Vertical Hold is one of two indoor rock climbing gyms in San Diego
As far as indoor rocking climbing gyms are concerned, Vertical Hold is pretty good. The gym is large with over 20,000 square feet of climbing surface which is divided into top-roping, bouldering, and lead climbing areas (see definitions here).
There is a cozy upper level which can be used for group gatherings and parties. The upper level is good for beginners since it is more private and the climbs are not as high (climb up one-story instead of two-story high). It's a good semi-private nook for bouldering.
The lower level is pretty much wall to wall climbing routes (over 250 routes) with a central island for bouldering and traverses. The climbing routes include chimneys, overhangs, and inclined slopes. Routes are changed occasionally, so it never gets boring.
This establishment has clean bathrooms which include lockers and a shower. The showers are necessary because the climbing gym is dusty from the chalk that the climbers use to prevent slippery, sweaty hands. For those who need a boost of energy, you can buy Cliff bars and chocolate bars on the premises.
The staff is quite friendly and helpful. If you are a beginner, don't be afraid to ask. Better to ask and be safe than to be ignorant and risk injury to yourself and fellow climbers. Even if you have climbed before, you can ask for a refresher to remind yourself of the figure 8 knot, how to tie-in, and how to belay properly.
This place is a full service indoor rock climbing gym an offers classes, seminars, workshops, summer camps and birthday parties. Be sure to check their bulletin board for organized events!
