San Diego Private Schools

Advantages:

Some parents chose to enroll their children in private schools instead of a government funded public school. Though not always the case, privates schools tend to have:

  • smaller classes sizes - this allows for a more one-on-one interaction between student and teacher. Because class sizes are smaller, the school equipment tends to be in better shape
  • fewer problems with discipline and gang activity because the school can regulate who is allowed to enroll. Children who have behavioral problems, are disruptive, or do not meet the schools academic standards are not admitted
  • greater safety, discipline, and moral training (especially in schools with religious affiliation).

Private school can be chosen by their
  - religious affiliate (for example, "Christian schools" or "Jewish schools")
  - gender specification (all girls school or all boys schools)
  - high academic achievement
  - class size or other reasons

Disadvantages:

The major drawback with private schools is the cost of tuition. Private schools are not funded by the government and as such, parents need to pay for their children to be educated in these school systems. Tuition can be as trivial as 5K per year or be as high as 45K per year; the rate is typically between 10K to 20K per year. Some schools may have a financial aid program or reduced rates if more than one child is enrolled. There is often a non-refundable application fee and/or an assessment fee. In some private schools, entry may require that the applicant be a member of a congregation or be active in a particular sect. Some schools require that the student be of high academic standards. Applicants may undergo a battery of tests & interviews; previous school records may be analyzed; letters of recommendation may be required; and family interviews may be performed. Some schools have a probation period where the new student is enrolled on a trial basis.
