Outdoor Ice Skating
Because of San Diego's year-round mild weather, outdoor ice skating is a rare thing. However, where there is a will, there is a way! In December you can find two outdoor ice skating rinks:
Outdoor Rink at Horton Square
Every year, Horton Square is converted into a "Fantasy on Ice" rink. The outdoor rink is 60 feet x 100 feet in size and is graced with holiday decorations. Everyone gets into the spirit by wearing their mitts, scarves, and a big smile. For locals, it's a tradition that they don't want to miss!
Skating is blocked off into 2 hour time slots:
Families are encouraged to come skate in the day time. Teenagers begin to skate in the afternoons and the pace quickens. The evenings bring out adults who enjoy a romantic night of skating hand in hand with their loved ones.
- Open from Nov 19, 2009 through January 10, 2010
- Closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
- Closes at 5 pm on X'mas Eve and New Year's Eve.
Cost is $10 for children and to $12 for adults (skates included). Proceeds benefit cancer research in the Rady Children's Hospital.

Parking is plentiful, but most require payment of some sort:
- metered parking on the streets (free after 6 pm; free all day Sundays)
- various parking structures (there is one right below rink)
- Horton Plaza (The ice rink is not apart of Horton Plaza shopping mall,
thus you will need to pay for parking unless you validate at the mall).
Outdoor Rink at Hotel Del Coronado
Started in 2005, this event is in its 5th fabulous year. The Windsor Lawn at the Hotel Del Coronado is converted to an outdoor ice skating rink. Believe it or not, you can be at the beach and ice skate at the same time!
Skating is blocked off into 2-hour or 3-hour time slots:
2 pm to 5 pm
6 pm to 9 pm
$10 for children
$15 for children
Bring your own skates or rent one for $5. Proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego.

The Hotel Del Coronado is world famous and has some of the finest facilities in San Diego. It is located in Coronado Island (though, it is technically a peninsula) and can be approached by car (Coronado Bridge), by Ferry (Coronado Ferry), or by bus/bicycle (Silver Strand), read more. The Hotel Del is said to be haunted by a different sort of spirit, read more.
