Julian Pie Company
If you are in or near Julian, be sure to stop by the Julian Pie Company because if there is one thing Julian is famous for, its apples and apple pie!
Julian Pie Company is a family owned business offering what some say to be the best apple pies ever. With two locations and 45 employees, this "mom-and-pop" store has grown to accommodate the incredible demand. It is estimated that they sell about 400,000 pies each year.
The menu includes your Original Apple pie and.... Dutch Apple, Raspberry Apple, Cherry Apple, Apple Mountain Berry, Peach Apple Crumb, Boysenberry Apple Crumb, and Blueberry Apple Crumb.
And if you're not really a fan of apple pies, you can also get pies of a different flavor: Strawberry Rhubarb, Pecan, Pumpkin, Cherry, Blueberry, Blackberry, Rhubarb, donuts and/or cookies.
If you can't decide which to get, you can buy a fresh pie to eat now, and a frozen apple pie to eat later. Julian apple pies have been described as: fresh, crisp, delicious, decadent, exquisite, and "yum". Some think that the pies are a bit too sweet, but to each his own!
In addition to pies, there are gifts, souvenirs and all sorts of apple pie paraphernalia. These include: aprons, T-shirts, mugs, posters, pot holders, pie cutters, pie servers, rolling pins, apple pie mix, apple butter, and apple pie crafts!
Some people will drive miles to get a Julian apple pie but this level of devotion has its drawbacks. Both stores are often quite busy so be prepared wait. It is common to see a line-up starting from the cashier, out the front door, and beyond.
All said and done, the establishment is actually quite small. Indoor seating is warm and homey. Outdoor seating is also quite pleasant though, there is only 3 or 4 tables. During busy times, you can expect to have no seating whatsoever. The line-up for the washroom is also quite extensive.
The photos from this web page are from the Santa Ysabel location. You can also buy Julian Apple pies at their original downtown location in Julian.
