Del Mar Racetrack
Placing Bets

Del Mar racetrack placing bets can be an intimidating affair if you have never done so before. Let's bring you up to speed before you go to the races:

You can place bets online, via telephone, or in person at the racetrack. If you are at the Del Mar racetrack you can make a bet at the Betting Windows which can have a real person, or a touch screen machine. You can download an app on your smart phone and place bets from your device (placing bets with your smart phone only works if you are at the Del Mar racetrack; it does not work from home).

Regardless of where/how you place your bet, you will need 4 pieces of information:
  1. Track and Race Number:
Some days have many races ongoing at once. The races occur in different locations (tracks) across the country and within each track, there are 8 to 10 races throughout the day. So you need to specify which location (track) and which race you are betting on.

  2. The Dollar Amount of the Wager:
At the Del Mar racetrack, the minimum wager for a regular or "straight" bet is $2. The minimum bet for some of the "exotic" bets are as low as $1. You are welcome to bet more, but $2 is the minimum bet.

  3. The Type of Bet:
Most racetracks will have the traditional "straight" bets:
Win = you win if the horse you picked came in 1st.
Place = you win if the horse you picked came in 1st or 2nd.
Show = you win if the horse you picked came in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd

  4. Del Mar racetrack also offers "exotic" bets which are more complicated. See description below.

  5. The Program Number of the Horse:
A racing horse comes with a battery of information including a name, a program number, colors, a jockey, an owner, stats, and more. You always place your bet using the program number. The number can be found on the Program which you should have received upon entry into the fairgrounds. Learn how to read the program here
