Wildlife in Anza Borrego
(see flowers here) | Anza Borrego is home to numerous insects such as ants, beetles, ladybugs, bees and butterflies. Butterflies are flighty: you may see them fluttering about, they are hard to photograph. |
Harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex anzensis) collect flowers and seeds from nearby plants and drag them under the ground for storage. These ants have mighty mandibles (jaw) to cut and harvest the seeds. The ants play a role in disseminating seeds.

 | At the height of the flowering season, there is an abundance of bugs who feed upon the flowers.
It is not unusual to see some mating. |
 | | Keep an eye out for small lizards, frogs, and snakes. These frogs were at the waterfalls in the Palm Canyon trail. They camouflage well with their environment but they are not difficult to catch. |
Lizards are quite common in Anza Borrego but they blend well with their environment. Often you can get a glimpse of them as they skitter away.

 | A black-tailed jackrabbit jumps away as we approach. Anza Borrego is also home to the Audubon Cottontail and the Brush Rabbit. Rabbits are most active in the early morning and late evening. |
In terms of mammals, the park is home to rabbits, bighorn sheep, coyotes, and mountain lions. These larger animals are hard to find though not impossible for those who visit the Park frequently. Photo by Greg Bulla

| Trail has varied terrain. It starts off on coarse sand with small boulders to circumvent. |  |
 | | At marker 8, you can see morteros made by ancient peoples who lived in this canyon. Shown are 3 indentations where seeds were ground for many centuries to form holes. |
 | | By marker 11, you will be able to see the palm oasis. It rises out of rocks and mountainsides. |
 | | Once you cross the foot bridge, you will begin to see lush vegetation. There are 3 or 4 cross points where you will cross the creek. Visitors enjoy scrambling over the boulders and exploring the water. |  |
 | | In the oasis, you will find cool shady places to rest. New growth is at the fringe while older trees are in the center of the oasis. Notice the "skirt" of dead leaves which hang down like a curtain. These dead leaves help keep in moisture and provide a home for small creatures. |
 | | Beyond the oasis and towards the right, there are 4 or 5 more water falls. Here you can find ladybugs, water spiders, frogs and flowers. |
