The seemingly-barren landscape will surprise you with flowers sprouting from between boulders and rocks.

Stalks laden with seeds sway heavily in the breeze. They are testimony of the desert's ability to sustain life.

If you take the time to look, you will find that the desert is vibrant with colors: reds, yellows, white, purples, and greens too.

Two kinds of purple beauties:

Left: sand verbana grow in clusters and pop up from the coarse sand.

Right: Lupin flowers can be found at higher elevations. These flowers stand like soldiers in defiance of the chilly evenings.

Jimson Weed (Datura) has large, showy, white flowers.

The red flowers of Chuparosa (Justicia californica) are like flames hovering over the bush.


Anza borrego flowers Be careful not to stomp on these small purple wildflowers. They grow in pretty clusters despite the coarse and dry conditions.

The Ocotillo plant is much loved by visitors. This plant has bright red flowers on the tip of its spindly branches.
