About San Diego
San Diego is at the southwest corner of USA. It is situated on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and is about 15 miles (24 km) north of Mexico. In 2006, there was approximately 1.25 million people living in San Diego; this makes it the 2nd largest city in California and the 8th largest city in USA.
Because of the research done in the University of California (UCSD) and other institutes & facilities within the area, San Diego is often considered a very "high-tech" city. In 2007, it was designated as one of the top 5 most Digital Cities in the USA.
San Diego has a strong military presence with 16 military facilities including the US Navy, the US Coast Guard, and the US Marine Corps. Today, San Diego has the largest naval fleet in the world.
Not surprisingly, San Diego's economy revolves around:
- defense-related manufacturing, ship-repair & construction,
- biotechnology & biosciences, computer sciences, telecommunications, software development,
- financial & business services, agriculture, and tourism.
As such, crime rate per capita is relatively low: San Diego ranks as the 6th safest city (2006) in the USA. Not only is San Diego relatively safe, it is also considered one of the Best Big Cities within the USA. There are many attractions, organized events, and natural beauties for families to enjoy.
For most of the year, the weather in San Diego is sunny and warm. In January 2007, the average low was 49°F (9°C). In summer, the average high was 75°F (24°C). On occasion, winds from the east (called Santa Anas) bring hot, dry air from the desert causing heat waves. The annual rainfall is about 10 inches of rain (25cm) with the wet season from December to March. However, it is easily forgotten during the many months of blue skies and blazing sun.
San Diego's nickname is "America's Finest City". However, all this fun in the sun comes with a price. The cost of living in San Diego is restrictively high: in 2006, it was ranked as the 6th least affordable metropolitan area in the USA.
- Much of this comes from high housing prices,
- record-breaking high gas prices, and
- traffic congestion due to dependency on the automobile.
