China Max Seafood Restaurant

China Max is one of the best Chinese restaurants in San Diego. Now - let me qualify that statement- on occasion they may have changed the chef so things may not be 100% perfect every time, but in my experience, time and time again, China Max serves up pretty darn good Hong Kong style Cantonese food.

The Establishment

ChinaMax has an upstairs and a downstairs. The upstairs has private party rooms and an open patio dining area. Most walk-in customers will be seated downstairs. The tables have white table cloths and green napkins. Half the tables are square and suited for 2 to 4 people; and the other half are big, round tables for 10 or more people. Lazy Suzys turn round and round to give everyone a chance to sample the food - not to mention, kids love to "deliver" entrees by spinning the platform.

The decor is not particularly noteworthy though what decorations they do have is classic. The best way to describe the restaurant is that it is clean and brightly lit. The bathrooms are large and clean. Food comes relatively quickly even when the dining room is full. The staff is completely Asian: brusque, to the point, and efficient.

The Food

The food is fabulous! Need I say more? The menu, like in many good Chinese restaurants, is expansive and includes appetizers, soups, and main entrees. ChinaMax specialize in seafood (well flavored and cooked perfectly) but also serves up chicken, pork, & beef dishes; rice & noodle dishes; and hot pots.

Dim Sum and banquet menus available.

Prices are a little high: about $15 to $20 per plate, and the serving sizes are moderate: expect to order at least one entree per adult.

Tea is free whereas steam rice is not.

All in all, I would say that China Max is one of the best, if not the best Chinese restaurant in San Diego. I'm not alone on this: check out these raving reviews.
